Research and Publication

Professor Stan Sidhu is Academic Head of the University of Sydney Endocrine Surgical Unit. This is one of the leading thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery units in the country and has been established at Royal North Shore and affiliated with the University of Sydney Teaching hospitals for over 50 years. This unit has been instrumental in introducing total thyroidectomy for multinodular goitre, thyroid cancer and Graves’ disease as a routine procedure in Australia over the last 20 years. Further ground breaking work in keyhole parathyroidectomy and keyhole adrenalectomy has been led by the Unit and has now become the standard of care practised by most Endocrine surgeons in Australia. Currently, his ongoing work is in improving voice outcomes during thyroid and parathyroid surgery utilising advanced neuromonitoring techniques, which have reduced objectively measured voice change to less than 1/1000 patients under Professor Sidhu’s care.

In addition to extensive clinical outcomes research, he is a senior researcher within the Thyroid and Adrenal research group, Cancer Genetics, Kolling Institute of Medical Research. He is a former holder of a NSW Cancer Institute Clinical Research Fellowship and current Sydney Medical School Foundation Fellow. He and his post-doctoral scientists and doctoral students have been successful at obtaining National Health and Medical Research Council, NSW Cancer Institute, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Endeavour Foundation and University of Sydney scholarships and grants.

He has authored or co-authored over 200 original peer reviewed publications in clinical and scientific journals and invited book chapters. As a widely known endocrine surgical specialist in Australia, he and his trainees have given more than 200 presentations at state, national and international meetings focusing on surgical education, clinical outcomes research and the molecular biology of thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal cancer.
